The Golden Temple is also known as Mahasukh Mandir or Buddha Dhatu Jadi in Buddhism. It is situated 4 km away from Balaghata area & 10 kilometers from Bandarban district. It is country's most significant Hinayana Buddhist pilgrimage site, featuring relics of Buddha. And this Buddhist temple has the second largest Buddha statue of Bangladesh. The temple is locally famous as “Kiyang”. It was not named as “Golden Temple” because it was made of Gold. Yet it is known as the Golden Temple because of the temple's richness of golden colors. This pagoda's design is inspired by Buddhist temples in Myanmar, China, and Thailand. Every year, a fair is held here. The pagoda is open for worshippers all day.
Golden temple is located on top of a 60 meter high mountain. The Buddhist statue that is kept here, was built during the contemporary period of Gautama Buddha and that makes it special. Golden temple cost approximately ten crores to construct. This pagoda is one of Southeast Asia's most well-known Buddhist temples. There is a lake called “Devata Pond” on the hill that contains water. This golden temple attracts not only Buddhists from all around the country but also tourist from all over the world.
How to go:
Buses leaving for Bandarban are available from Abdullahpur, Arambagh, Kallyanpur, Gabtali, and Sayedabad in Dhaka. The fare of these buses depends on whether they provide AC service or not. It takes 8–10 hours to go to Bandarban from Dhaka by bus.
You can also go by train, going to Chittagong first by Sonar Bangla, Subarna Express, Turna Nishita, and Mahanagar Godhuli trains from Dhaka to Chittagong. Class-wise rent varies. Besides, you can directly come to Chittagong from Dhaka by air.
From Baddarhat in Chittagong, a few buses set out for Bandarban. You can reach Bandarban by bus from the Dhampara bus stand in Chittagong.
Golden Temple from Bandarban
One can go to Swarna Mandir by hiring a CNG Autorickshaw or Chandergari/Jeep from Bandarban. But if you reserve a car you can visit more sightseeing places around Bandarban like Nilgiris, Nilachal, Chimbuk, Shailprapat, Meghla etc.
You will have to pay a toll on the road to go to the golden temple by car, and a fee per person will be charged to enter the golden temple.
General visitors are not allowed to enter the temple after 6 pm. So make sure you give a visit before the closing hours. Shorts, lungis and shoes are prohibited inside the temple premises.
