Nafakhum waterfall is located in the Remakri union of Thanchi sub-district, Bandarban of Bangladesh. This waterfall is one of the most stunning, impressive and largest waterfalls in Bangladesh by volume and is about 25-30 meters (82-98 feet) high. The cascade's impressive height and the sheer volume of water as it crashes down creates a mesmerizing sight for visitors. Some calls it as “Bengal’s Niagara”. The dwellers of Remakri are the Marmas. The waterfall is known as “Khum” in Marma language. This unforgettable natural enigma can only be observed after a three-hour walk from Remakri. The water from the Remakri canal flowed to Nafakhum and fell roughly 25-30 feet, giving rise to this waterfall.
Accessing Nafakhum involves an adventurous journey. Tourists usually embark on a trek through hilly terrain, forests, and sometimes even boat rides along the Sangu River. The remote and less frequented path to reach the waterfall adds to its appeal for adventure seekers.The trek offers breathtaking views and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the surroundings.
The waterfall flows into a crystal-clear pool at its base, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the refreshing water and even swim in its pristine pool.
The waterfall's appearance might vary throughout the year, with its grandeur and water volume fluctuating based on the seasons. Visiting during the rainy season can offer a more impressive display due to increased water flow.
Best Time to Visit Nafakhum:
Throughout the year, adventure seekers go to Nafakhum Falls. However, during the monsoon season, if the Sangu river's water flow exceeds the danger level, the administration does not grant permission to visit Nafakhum. Water is scarce in Nafakhum during the winter. So the best period is after the monsoon and before winter (September-November). But no matter when you visit, you will enjoy the scenery. The Nafakhum excursion will live long in your memory.
How to go:
You have to start from Bandarban then from Bandarban to Thanchi, from Thanchi by boat across Sangu River to Remakri Bazar and at last from there on foot to Nafakhum.
Bandarban to Thanchi
The distance from Bandarban to Thanchi upazila is about 79 km. There are two ways to go from Bandarban to Thanchi; By bus or reserve jeep. Local bus leaves for Thanchi from Thanchi bus stand in Bandarban. It will take 4-5 hours. Reserve Jeep/Chander Gari will take 3-3.5 hours. One car can carry 12-14 people easily. On the way to Thanchi you will pass beautiful spots like Milanchari, Chimbuk and Nilgiris. This long hill trek will refresh your eyes and mind as you see the pristine landscape around.
Thanchi to Remakri
After reaching Thanchi you must fix a guide as you can't start for Nafakhum tour without a guide. Only the permitted from Upazila Prosecution can be taken as a guide. After fixing the guide you need to take permission from Thanchi BGB Camp/ Police Station. Name, address, phone number, where to go, how long will stay for all the traveling members-all information should be written and submitted on paper and your guide will help in these tasks. Remember that it is not allowed to go from Thanchi to Remakri after 3 pm. So if you want to go to Remakri on the same day, you must be in Thanchi by 2 o'clock. Otherwise, you have to go to Remakri from Thanchi the next morning. This can take you a day longer.
After obtaining permission, small engine boats should be hired from Thanchi Ghat. 4-5 people can go in one boat. You will have to reserve the boat. It will take two to two and a half hours to go. If the water is low in Sangu, it may take a little longer to get off the boat and walk at some places. On the way, the beauty of Sangu River will enchant you. Besides, Padmukh, Tindu, Rajapathar Barapathar area and Remakri falls will be passed on the way.
Remakri to Nafakhum
Usually, if you leave Bandarban early in the morning, it will be late afternoon to reach Remakri. From Remakri you need to hire another local guide. It takes 2-3 hours to reach Nafakhum from Remakri. However, the time will depend on the walking speed of the traveling companions and the time of departure. Remakri canal has a lot of water during monsoon. If the water is high, this crossing will take more time. As you gaze at the beauty of the Remakri Canal and its surroundings, you will hear the roar of the Nafakhum Falls.
