The Freedom Fighter Memorial Block

The Freedom Fighter Memorial Block in Ghoshpara, Kurigram, stands as a poignant tribute to the martyrs who bravely fought and sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War in 1971. It is also known as "Shaheed Muktijoddha Smriti Falak".

Inspired by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic 7th March speech, the people of Kurigram, like others across Bangladesh, were motivated to resist the Pakistani armed forces' oppression. On March 31, a joint force consisting of local police, Ansar, Kurigram students, and EPRs was assembled to oppose the Pakistani forces. During the confrontation, several freedom fighters lost their lives due to Pakistani gunfire.

When the Pakistani forces departed to capture Lalmonirhat after facing resistance from the freedom fighters, they launched another attack on Kurigram. The invading soldiers killed Sheikh Hedayet Ullah, the then Jail Incharge of Kurigram Sub Jail, and four prison guards, Lal Mohammad, Ansar Ali, Sajjad Hossain, and Zahir Uddin. The four prison guards were laid to rest behind the jail barracks on the east side of the main prison wall. Sheikh Hedayet Ullah, the Jail Incharge, was buried on the west end of the prison with the assistance of his fellow fighters.

The Shaheed Muktijoddha memorial plaque at the Freedom Fighter Memorial Block bears the names of these four martyrs and lists additional freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives in the Kurigram district during the Liberation War.

The Freedom Fighter Memorial Block thus stands as a solemn monument commemorating the bravery and sacrifices of these heroes who valiantly fought for the independence of Bangladesh.

Kurigram can be reached by buses from Asadgate, Kallyanpur and Gabtali in the capital Dhaka. The fare will be depending on the bus. Again, you can go directly to Kurigram by taking the Kurigram Express or Rangpur Express train from Kamalapur railway station. One can visit Shaheed Mukti Joddha Smriti Falak located at a distance of only 1 km from the zero point of Kurigram city.
