
The Teesta Barrage, also known as the Teesta Irrigation Project, is Bangladesh's largest irrigation project. On one side of the Teesta Barrage is Doani village of Goddimari union under Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district, while on the other is Dalia of Khalisa Chapani union under Dimla upazila of Nilphamari district. The then-government decided to create the Teesta Barrage in 1937 so it could provide irrigation to the uncultivated flat land of Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, and Bogra districts. Later that year, in 1979, construction proceeded on a 615-meter-long barrier with 44 radial gates, which reached its conclusion in 1990.
On both sides of the Teesta Barrage river, green fences have been built. There are also a number of excursion spots in the barrage area. Running along the barrage's dark pitch path or the breathtaking beauty of the surroundings enchants the visitors who come here with a wonderful illusion.
How to go
If you want to visit Teesta Barrage from Dhaka or another city, head to Nilphamari or Lalmonirhat district, depending on your preference. Rickshaws, scooters and motorcycles can be hired for going to Teesta from Nilphamari.
And you can also go from Dhaka to Lalmonirhat by bus or train. From Kamalapur Railway Station, Lalmoni Express train departs at 09:45 PM on 6 days except Friday. The price of the train ticket depends on the seat. Besides, various buses departs for Lalmonirhat from Gabtali Bus Terminal (Dhaka) and Kalyanpur (Dhaka). AC/Non-AC buses are available. Various types of vehicles are there to reach Teesta Barrage by road from Lalmonirhat Sadar.
Where will you stay
There is a Retirement Rest House, nest to Teesta Barrage, under the supervision of the Water Development Board. Even though, This rest house is not open to the public, but with the consent of the authorities, one can spend the night here. Or else, You must travel to the Nilphamari or Lalmonirhat districts for an overnight stay.
