Harishchandra Path, Jaldhaka, Nilphamari

Harishchandra Path is the remains of an ancient palace belonging to Khutamara Union of Jaldhaka Upazila of Nilphamari district, which is known for its historical sites and natural beauty. The district is in the northern part of the country, near the border with India.

The path is named after King Harishchandra, a legendary figure in Hindu mythology known for his unwavering devotion to truth and justice. According to Hindu mythology, King Harishchandra's story is told in the ancient text "Harishchandra Upakhyan," which emphasizes the value of truthfulness and righteousness. The location is encircled by 5 massive black stone blocks on approximately one bigha of land, which looks to be a towering earthen mound from a distance. The mound was once 50-60 feet tall, but with the passage of time, the height has been reduced to 10 feet. Although this is conventional, the stones sink into the mound's soil and then rise again. Many palaganas and jatrapalas have been written in praise of the beneficent monarch Harishchandra. King Harishchandra started constructing a Shiva temple here before his death but did not manage to conclude it. Following his death, the temple was finished on the initiative of the local Hindu community. There were multiple idols here in ancient times, but they are no longer there. It is said that when the renovation work of the temple started during the British period, the door of the temple was suddenly closed when 8 persons working inside the Shiva temple. Excavations were stopped after this incident and no further renovation work was done. Every year 3 religious festivals are celebrated in the Shiva temple with grandeur. Apart from the temple, the Harish Chandra village has the remains of some of the ancient structures of King Harishchandra.

How to go & Where to stay

Nilphamari district is accessible from Dhaka via road and train. Buses to Nilphamari depart from Dhaka's Collegegate, Gabtali, and Mohakhali. Nilphamari may also be reached by the Nilsagar Express train from Kamalapur railway station. You can also reach Sayedpur . From Nilphamari town one can take bus/CNG/autorickshaw to reach Harishchandra Path located in Khutamara Union.
