Catholic Church

The first and earliest Roman Catholic Church in the northern region is located in Nilphamari district, 9 kilometers from Sayedpur. The Catholic Church, like other religious institutions in Bangladesh, often participates in interfaith dialogue and collaborative efforts with other religious communities. In 1886, this church was built for the Anglo Indian Catholics and Protestant Christians who were working on the Sayedpur Railway. Sayedpur which was a center of trade and commerce in the past, it’s importance of increased a lot during the Assam Bengal Railway’s establishment during the British rule. A small locoshed was built just north of the railway station, and the railway factory was built on an area of approximately 110 acres around the locoshed. In the railway factories, Bengalis and Biharis, as well as British and Anglo-Indians from the Roman Catholic and Protestant groups, worked. The British Government built two churches in Roman and European architecture at opposite ends of the neighborhood for the worship of working Christians. Today, the Catholic Church serves as a religious center for the Catholic Christian community in Nilphamari district. It provides a place for worship, religious ceremonies, and community gatherings.

The church next to the railway plant gate is dedicated to Mary (Mary), Jesus Christ's mother. The British government built a priest's home next to the church on 3 bigha of railway land in 1892. Many visitors go long distances to see these two historic churches.

Nilphamari district is accessible by road, train, and air from Dhaka. Direct buses to Syedpur in Nilphamari depart from Dhaka's Collegegate, Gabtali, and Mohakhali. If you take Nil Sagar Express train to reach Sayedpur, you can start from Kamalapur railway station. The train ticket cost, depends on the seat. Near the Sayedpur railway station, Catholic Church is situated. Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US Bangla Airlines, and NovoAir fly to Sayedpur from Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport.
